Short answer: your customers now search in three places - Google, Maps and AI tools - and most businesses are only set up for one of them.
Search isn't sexy. Nobody gets excited about it the way they do about ads or social media. But it's how most of your customers actually find you, and because most businesses undervalue it, it's where the easiest wins are.
People still search Google. They also search Maps, ask ChatGPT and Perplexity for recommendations, and Google now answers many questions before anyone clicks a website.
Each of these works differently. But they all need the same things from you: to understand what your business does, who you help, where you operate, and why you're credible. If they can't work that out from your website and what's said about you online, they won't show you.
The tricks that used to work don't work on any of this. Clear, useful content from a genuinely good business does. If you're good at what you do, that's good news.
